Kick off a Career in Sport Volunteering
Community sports activity could not run without the support of millions of volunteers.
So why not help out your local community by becoming a volunteer. Voluntary activity can be crucial in ensuring that local children have somewhere to play, a sports club is able to run itself or disability sporty activities can be maintained.
Sport offers a wide variety of voluntary opportunities and also involves millions of people.
There are 5,821,400 sports volunteers representing 14% of the adult population.
26% of all English volunteers are involved within sports
They contribute one billion hours each year to sport, equivalent to 720,000 additional paid workers.
Sports volunteers are an unseen army. Many volunteers could be the friends of families of the performers or club members who may have reached the end of their playing days but still maintain their links with the club.
Many clubs have been ran through the enthusiasm of a small pool of volunteers but it has become apparent that in today’s sporting environment that further voluntary support is essential for them to develop. Business planning could be useful for funding applications, administration systems for monitoring outputs or marketing skills to help publicise club activities. Extra volunteers with wide ranging skills from web design to bus drivers or accounts to catering would be welcomed by hundreds of clubs throughout the Humber. Clubs may not advertise but most would welcome a few hours voluntary assistance in a wide range of roles that help the club and community as a whole.
There a range of options if you would be interested in offering your skills. You could either approach clubs or organisations in your area directly or contact someone from a governing body of sport or local authority sports development team.
Another option would be to contact your local Volunteer Bureau who are working with the Humber Sports Partnership to promote volunteering within sport. Clubs are now able to advertise for additional support and potential volunteers could identify clubs who welcome their skills.
