Community Sports Coaches 2007 - Press Coverage
The Humber Sports Partnership can now reveal the results of the £1.6 million investment into local sports coaching across the region. Over 23 coaches have been appointed to work with the local community in a range of projects in settings across the four local authorities.
The Community Sports Coach Scheme is a national initiative developed by Sport England and Sports Coach UK. The aim is to ensure that a number of qualified Community Sports Coaches are working at the local level, to increase the number and range of coaching opportunities according to strategic and local need. The four local authorities within the Humber each submitted bids to the National Lottery and were successful in securing the funding for a range of projects.
This money will be spread out over the four districts of the Humber region and will fund the employment of 23 coaches over three years. Sports including athletics and gymnastics will be delivered locally in schools and clubs in the Humber whilst other coaches have been appointed to develop dance, healthy lifestyles, outdoor pursuits and disability sports projects.
Rachel Roberts, Director of the Humber Sports Partnership commented: “We are thrilled to have secured this funding for the county. This will have a major impact on the delivery of high quality sports coaching in the Humber and we are confident that this will result in increased, sustained participation, which is great for the future health, fitness and well-being of local people and indeed the country’
The Community Sports Coach Scheme aims to nationally establish a network of paid and qualified community sports coaches working at a local level. These positions will increase the number and range of high quality coaching opportunities.
The funding for this scheme has come from the National Lottery and was match funded by local partners Tribune Trust, Positive Futures, School Sports Partnerships, Football Foundation, Humberside Police, Extended Schools, Local Authorities and more.
Hopes for this project are high. The first phase of the project saw over 1,500 young people receive quality tennis coaching between May and July 2006 - and 900 of these young people were from socially disadvantaged areas.
During a six month period more than 700 young people have been engaged in basketball coaching in the region, 300 of this total were girls and 250 from socially disadvantaged areas. In the East Riding area, an FA coach enthused more than 2,800 girls with football and offered opportunities for in excess of 200 disabled people.
Geoff Ogden, Chair of the Humber Sports Partnership Executive Board said " The power of sport is significant in many other areas of community life namely improving health, reducing crime, raising educational standards and subsequently benefiting the economy. Great care went into submitting the bid and deployment of the coaches to reflect local need and problems within urban and rural communities of the Humber region".
