Community Sports Coach Scheme
What is the Community Sports Coach (CSC) Scheme?
The headline national objective for the Community Sports Coach (CSC) scheme is to establish 3,000 paid, qualified Community Sports Coach working at local level, to increase the number and range of coaching opportunities according to strategic and local need by 2006. It is intended that the scheme will result in:- A step change in developing a career structure for coaching;
- An increase in the number of qualified coaches employed at a local level;
- Quality standards for the recruitment, employment, management and development of coaches;
- Managed, quality continuous professional development support for employed coaches;
- High-quality coaching with a focus on young people.
What's happening in Humberside
Phase 1
In our first phase of Community Sports Coaches - 12 coaches were appointed. The sports covered are football, basketball, tennis, cricket, swimming, table tennis ,rugby union and street sports and they are based at varying locations throughout the Humber region.
Phase 2
This is a £1.6 million investment into local sports coaching across the region. Over 23 coaches have been appointed to work with the local community in a range of projects in settings across the four local authorities.
The Community Sports Coach Scheme is a national initiative developed by Sport England and Sports Coach UK. The aim is to ensure that a number of qualified Community Sports Coaches are working at the local level, to increase the number and range of coaching opportunities according to strategic and local need. The four local authorities within the Humber each submitted bids to the National Lottery and were successful in securing the funding for a range of projects.
This money will be spread out over the four districts of the Humber region and will fund the employment of 23 coaches over three years. Sports including athletics and gymnastics will be delivered locally in schools and clubs in the Humber whilst other coaches have been appointed to develop dance, healthy lifestyles, outdoor pursuits and disability sports projects.
Focus of CSC Work in Humberside
- On the FUNdamentals / Learning to Train or equivalent phases of NGB player pathways (typically multi-skill work will concentrate on young people between the ages of 5 to 11 years of age; sports specific provision will be throughout a variety of ages in accordance with the relevant player pathway)
- To develop core movement and sport skills. It is envisaged that the CSC will coach within schools, School Sports Partnerships, local sports clubs and other community settings (e.g. sports centres)
- The coaching activity will be held within both curriculum and non-curriculum time
- The bulk of the work of the CSC is to actually coach young people. It is envisaged that around 20 - 25 hours per week of the full time coach will be spent actually coaching
- On supporting the development of other coaches regionally
