Hull & East Yorkshire’s Sporting Heroes and Champions 2010
Hundreds of the region’s dedicated sports fans converged on the KC Stadium on Thursday 3rd February to see their sporting heroes honoured at a glittering awards ceremony.
The second annual Hull and East Yorkshire (HEY) Sporting Heroes and Champions Awards recognises the achievements of both professional and amateur sportsmen and women.

Here are the winners of the Awards:
Coach of the Year- Mick Bromby- Mick has been coaching Boxing for over 20 years and has produced over 40 championship winners in that time. Mick has also worked with hundreds of youngsters and has changed the lives of many through discipline and training.
Talented Amateur Disabled Performer- Clifford Woolass- Clifford became world champion at new age Kurling in May 2010 and this was only the second time he had entered the competition.
Amateur Club of the Year- Driffield RUFC- Driffield RUFC supports nearly 300 players from under the age of seven up to adults. It has recently introduced a Mentor scheme to bring together senior players and junior players. They were also recently awarded the Yorkshire RFU Seal of Approval Club of the Year 2010.
Amateur Sports Person of the Year- Abbi Carter- Abbi has achieved a phenomenal amount this year in the Hammer including winning every national title in her age group and competing in many championships across the UK. She has also broken the record for distance thrown in the under 17 catergory with a staggering 55.44m.
Sports School of the Year; Primary- Thanet Primary School- Thanet offers a great range of sports including Athletics, Dance, Judo, Football and Rugby for their pupils to enjoy, with over 77% participating in 3 hours of PE each week.
Sports School of the Year; Secondary- St Mary's Sports College- St Mary's is an outstanding school offering high quality PE to all of its students. 77% of all students recieve 3 hours or more of PE each week compared to the national average of 51%.
Supporter of the Year- Ian Cutler- Ian has been a fervent supporter of Hull KR for over 30 years and has played a major part in fundraising for the club. Ian has also organised bus trips to away games both in the UK and abroad as well as race nights, league games, cup games and friendlies.
Services to Sport- Julie Williams- Julie goes above and beyond for the Hull High Fliers Trampoline Club and has put in a huge amount of hours over the last 30 years. Her dedication and commitment is unquestionable. Julie is also responsible for putting Hull on the map in the Trampoline world.
Professional Sporting Moment of the Year- Hull FC 4-21 Hull KR- Hull KR beat Hull FC in the biggest game between the City Rivals since the 1980 Challenge Cup Final. It was a first ever Play off win for the Robins and a night that will live long in the memory of every Red and White.
Professional Sports Personality of the Year- Lee Esders (Hull Stingrays)- The young British forward knows no fear in the tough game of Ice Hockey. Standing at only 5 foot 7, he is at his happiest when battling with the big guys. Lee is a perfect example of a local lad who has the right attitude and commitment to his sport.
Diamond Award 2010- Janet Nolan- Janet has been actively involved with the Special Olympics for over 20 years. She works tirelessly for disability sport, all the while looking after her 19 year old daughter, Mary, who has down's syndrome. She is always finding opportunities for athletes and their families in her continual quest to show 'disabilty' can be turned into 'ability'. She is a real inspiration.
