Providing access to sport across the region

Step into Sport Conference 2006

The annual Step into Sport Conference took place at the Hull University Sports and Fitness Centre on Tuesday, February 7.

The conference is designed to offer young people various workshops that will support their personal development within the volunteer field.

The day had five workshops including SAQ, careers in sport and leisure, progressive coaching, roles within a sports club and sports science. The conference had more than 190 volunteers from Hull, East Riding, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire.

The event was coordinated by the Humber Sports Partnership team.  Reece Bird, club/coach development officer, said: "The day was a fantastic success for everyone involved.  The young people had five progressive workshops that were facilitated by officers from the Football Association, Yorkshire Cricket, School sport partnerships and the Humber Sports Partnership Team.

"The young volunteers now have the opportunity to take their new experiences and offer their time in some of the Humber Sports Partnership's quality accredited sports clubs. The volunteers will be supported in their chosen sport and will benefit from free generic sports courses as well as learning new skills that will support their personal development.

"The young people also benefited from the attendance of the new Director for the Humber Sports Partnership, Rachel Roberts, who gave an inspirational presentation. The conference was also attended by Nick Barmby (Hull City) who spoke to all young people and gave a questions and answers session."

The Step into Sport community volunteering programme is aimed at young people between the ages of 16-19 years who have undertaken some leadership training, such as a CSLA Award or National Governing Body leaders Award. The programme, delivered and supported through school sport partnerships and county sports partnerships, provides opportunities for the young volunteers to undertake a volunteer placement in an appropriate local club or organisation, and work towards a national Step into Sport award for 50, 100 or 200 hours of volunteering.
