Junior Gymnastic Festival in Hull

24 June 2009

Gym Event June 09Primary Schools from the David Lister, Andrew Marvell and Trinity House clusters took part in a gymnastic festival at Woodford leisure centre on Thursday the 11th of June.  The event saw 9 primaries with a total of 85 children take part in the event which was based on the English Gymnastics Keys Steps scheme.

Previous to the event each school had received 6 weeks of support from Natalie Laws , Community Sports Coach for Gymnastics . During the support programme teachers are given new skills to use in their gymnastics curriculum lessons and the schools are also given the option to have an after school club for 6 weeks. During the after school clubs teachers and children are shown the skills and simple floor routines used in the Key Steps festivals.  It is hoped that schools carry on the after schools clubs which is one of the main aims if the programme, to increase participation in the sport by giving teachers and teaching assistants the skills and resources to run school clubs.

The festival included both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children with a maximum of 5 children from each school. The children performed their floor routine which they had learnt at school, this was then marked and a score was given out of 10. They also had the opportunity to try out the body management routine which concentrates on the strength and flexibility aspects of the sport and also the vault. The event saw Gymnasts from the Primaries who attend the City of Hull Gymnastics Club helping out, showing routines and also Young Leaders from David Lister officiating the event.

he highest scores for Key Stage 1 went to Lily Todd and Sian Cox with 9.0 in third, Charlie Lanes and Chelsea Heath with 9.2 in second and Weronika Golebiewska with 9.4 in first place.  In Key Stage 2 third place went to Elloise Gossip and Courtney Watson with 8.1, second place went to Jasmine Grannon and Charlotte Satterwaite with a score of 8.3 and first place went to Lee Broadbent and Charlie Sexton with 8.6.

All children were awarded with a certificate of attendance and all were seen to have a great time showing what they had learnt in school and at the festival.
