National Governing Bodies
The work of the National Governing Bodies (NGBs) to assist in the development of Sports Clubs in the Humber.
A National Governing Body (NGB) represent and govern all areas of their chosen sport. They work hard to oversee the existing vision and help to shape the future direction and focus of that particular Sport.
National Governing Bodies are responsible for:-
- Providing a National directive and structure
- Increase the quality and quantity of coaches, volunteers and officials by providing coach education and mentoring opportunities
- Provide clear pathways for athletes to progress
- Organise and/or provide information on competitive opportunities at all levels
- Support and assist with facility development
- Provide information and give advice on funding opportunities
- Support (affiliated) clubs to achieve clubmark accreditation. Provide clear objectives and actions for clubs and individuals to assist in the development of their sport
Many National Governing Bodies have in place a Whole Sport Plan (or strategy) which outlines the focus of that particular sport and explains in detail how aims and objectives are to be met. Many NGB employ regional officers to lead on the delivery and implementation of the plan and these officers coordinate and oversee the development and performance objectives of a particular sport and offer various levels of support to clubs and individuals.
In short, the purpose of National Governing Bodies is:

- To sustain participation
- Develop talent
- Deliver top-level success

By affiliating, clubs are provided with insurance (including public liability) and support from the NGB in the areas detailed above. Some NGB’s have packages although you would need to contact the NGB’s directly for more information.
