Overall in the Humber, we are below the national average for levels of participation.
The national average was 21.0% The Humber’s average was 20.2%.
Participation is a key target for everyone involved in sport, from people working in Sports Development, Leisure Centre’s, Sports Clubs, National Governing Bodies of sport and for those participating in Sport and Active Recreation.
By 2008, the aim is to increase participation by 1%
DEMOGRAPHICS
The Key Driver is Participation: Comparing male and female 3x30 participation on rates with age, we can see a significant difference at school leaving age (=28% for females and=46% for males).
Male and female participation rates exhibit sharp declines until an upturn for males aged 30-34 and females aged 35-45. Following the temporary upturn, both male and female 3x30 participation rates then decline relatively steadily with age.
AGE
The key driver for all involved in sport and active recreation is to achieve an increase in participation.
In common with the overall national picture, 3x30 participation in the Humber reduces with age.
There is a steep initial reduction in participation levels between 16 and 30, followed by a more
gradual decline from 30-80.
Club Membership
The national average for Club Memberships is 25.0%.
Within the Humber the average is 21.5%
To reach the national average target, each of the Local Authority areas within the Humber on average would have to increase their club membership by 1%, this would mean if North Lincolnshire alone, had a population of 157,050 - to reach an increase of 1% - 1,570 further people would have to join a sporting club!
Instructors & coach
Again, within the Humber the amount of people who receive any tuition from an instructor or a coach is below the national average. From this graph it clearly mirrors the above and the results relating
to sports club members – increasing levels of people who attend sports clubs obviously has some correlation to the amount of tuition received.
If we could increase the amount of people who are members with the sports clubs, then would this increase the level of people receiving tuition from a coach or instructor?

Volunteering in the Humber
The Humber is below the national average for volunteering. North Lincolnshire is the only region in the Humber who is above the national average.
Do the levels of volunteering in the Humber have an effect on the levels of people who are members of sports clubs and taking part in organised competitive sport?
National average - 4.7% Humber’s average - 4.4%
Competitive Sport
The national average for people participating in Competitive Sport (15%) within the Humber is slightly below average at only 14.6%, if each of the local authority areas could increase the levels of
people who participate in sport competitively by only 0.5% then the Humber would be above the national average by 1%!
