Active People Survey

The results of the Sport England Active People Survey were released in December 2006, and provide us with a detailed insight into levels of participation in adults (over 16 years of age) in England.

  • The Active People Survey is the largest single research study ever undertaken by telephone in Europe (364,501 completed interviews in England)
  • The survey has been conducted by Ipsos MORI
  • A Minimum of 1,000 interviews were completed per Local Authority (at least 500 interviews in the summer and at least 500 in the winter to account for the effects of seasonality on participation rates)
  • approximately 1 in 20 households in England were contacted over the year
  • The survey started in mid October 2005, and was completed in mid October 2006. It ran for a year to ensure that the results are not biased by variations in participation associated with different seasons
  • The survey is capable of measuring statistically valid change of 3 to 4% over 3 years for every local authority in England

The survey asked people about active recreation (including unstructured sport, casual leisure time activity, recreational walking and recreational cycling) as well as about organised sport (through clubs, competitions and tuition).   The survey asked people about their activity and sport levels over the previous four week period.

Detailed results by sport, region, sub region and for each Local authority area are available through the Active People diagnostic.
